IBAs Needing Caretakers in BC

As of March 1, 2010, six of BC's 84 IBAs still need Caretakers. Four of these IBAs are on the west coast of Vancouver Island, including:

  • Klaskish River & E. Creek Watersheds-inland forested site designated for breeding Marbled Murrelets
  • Hesquit Lake Area-inland forested site designated for breeding Marbled Murrelets
  • Megin, Moyeha, Watta & Pretty Girl Watersheds-inland forested site designated for breeding Marbled Murrelets
  • Cleland Island and SE Clayoquot Sound-an ecological reserve that supports breeding seabirds, Black Brant, White-winged Scoters & waterfowl

The 5th site, Mussel and Kynoch Inlet & Sheep Passage, is located on the North Coast of BC, north of Bella Bella. Mussel and Kynoch is important habitat for Marbled Murrelet and Mew Gull, as well as other waterbirds.

The 6th site, Kotcho Lake, is located in the Northeast corner of the province, 90 km from Fort Nelson. The relatively isolated Kotcho Lake supports large numbers of waterfowl, especially in the fall.

Please contact the IBA Coordinator if you are interested in becoming a volunteer Caretaker for one of these sites or if you have any suggestions for potential Caretakers.
