Annual Reporting

Annual reports are an important communication tool between Caretakers and IBA Coordinators at BC Nature, Bird Studies Canada and Nature Canada. Information collected by the annual reports helps IBA partners to plan, fund and undertake activities to support IBA conservation across BC and Canada. This page describes when, how and what information should be included in your annual report to maximize its utility.

Timing

If a site is only visited once per year or over a short time period, you may wish to submit your annual report following your site visit(s). Alternatively, please submit your annual report at the end of the year.

Format

You may complete the annual report form (PDF) electronically and return by email to kenglund at alumni.sfu.ca. (The required reader can be downloaded from Adobe.) Alternatively, you may complete a written annual report and send it to the email listed above or mail it to Krista Englund at #18-1141 Eagleridge Drive, Coquitlam BC, V3E 1K1.

Content

If you choose to submit a written annual report, please answer the following questions in your report:

  • Site Visits: When was the site visited this year (include dates and areas visited and type of monitoring conducted)?

  • Birds (State): (a) What was the maximum number of each target species observed and the associated date? [Please note if this high count was for individuals, or breeding pairs for colonial birds; and, if known, indicate how long (weeks, months) these high numbers persisted.] (b) Were there any other notable bird observations, such as rare, abundant or unusual species or congregations? [Please attach detailed monitoring data if not entered into an online database such as ebird.ca]

  • Habitat (State): Has the habitat ('state') changed in any significant way since your last report or since the site was designated?

  • Conservation Threats (Pressures): Have any new or potential conservation threats ('pressures') arisen, or existing pressures worsened, since your last report or since the site was designated?

  • Responses: (a) Are any monitoring, stewardship or conservation related activities occurring in your IBA (e.g. wildlife or habitat research, habitat restoration/protection, management planning)? (b) Are any IBA outreach or awareness activities occurring in your IBA? (c) Would you like to initiate some of these activities, but need some assistance?

  • Effort: How many hours did you (and your partners) spend on Caretaker related duties this year (e.g., travelling, monitoring, reporting, outreach, conservation, etc)? [Note: This information helps us leverage funding to assist with the IBA program.]
